Artificial Sweeteners – Substitute To High Calorie Sweetener

Artificial Sweeteners is useful for reducing the calorie intake. This ingredient contains less weight and gives natural taste like sugar, honey, and maple syrup.
 They won’t contain glucose, thus people suffering from diabetes can make use of them regularly.  They come in a variety of forms and tastes. Each sweetener has a slightly different intensity of character to its taste. Thus, add this ingredient as per your taste.

Saccharin

Saccharin also known as Sweet’n Low or Hermesetas.  It is one of the oldest artificial sweeteners available in the market. This ingredient is calorie-free and contains about three hundred times more sweetness than sugar. Although, it tastes slightly bitter.

In the United States, this artificial sweetener is an additive but served in Canada as a tabletop sweetener. Studies show that intake of this ingredient in the large quantity can cause cancer without showing any harmful effects in humans.

Aspartame

Aspartame,  brand name is NutraSweet also known as Equal. It is made from two amino acids, phenylalanine, and aspartic acid. It contains the same calories, similar to that of sugar.

Aspartame losses it sweetness when cooked and exposed to certain acids. Hence, you must avoid it while baking. The ingredient found in soft drinks, candies, and desserts. Studies suggest that in some cases aspartame can trigger headaches, but the vast majority use in without obvious problems.

Acesulfame Potassium (acesulfame K)

It is 200 times sweeter than sugar and is calorie-free. Marketed under the name Sunett, it is highly stable, withstands heat, and can be used for baking. This sweetener is easily digestible and adds zero calories to the body.

It is found in spreads, beverages, candies, gum and baked products. People on potassium restricted diet or with sulfa-antibiotic allergies shall intake Ace-K only after consulting with their physician.

Sucralose

Sucralose, made from sucrose, is about 600 times sweeter than sugar. Marketed as Splenda, it is highly stable and can be used in various foods, beverages, and baked products. Add this artificial sweetener into your diet without thinking much about putting on extra weight. As, this ingredient is highly soluble and gets quickly absorbed in the body.

Sugar Alcohols

Sugar alcohols are another category of sweeteners. They are derived from plant products such as fruit and are referred to as nutritive sweeteners because they provides calories and may effect blood sugar. They contains fewer calories  than table sugar because they are not well absorbed.

The most common include sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol, and lactitol. One strong benefit of these sweeteners is their role  in preventing dental cavities. You’ll find them in candies, gum, jams and jellies, and some cough syrups. In excess, they can cause abdominal discomfort and bloating and have a laxative effect.
